One finds Kowalskis among the Kashubs everywhere, but it is not a distinctly Kashub name. Kowalski is one of the most common names in Poland everywhere. "Kowal" means Blacksmith.

This is one of the most common Kashub names everywhere in Kashub Poland, throughout Ontario and in the U.S.A. There are 18 in Stevens Point, Polonia phone directory, 26 in Winona, Minnesota directory, all spelled Kulas. In French "KU" is written "COU" and the early French priests in Renfrew, Ontario wrote the name down as "Coulas" (Kujach as Couya, etc.) and the spelling "Coulas" stuck in many families. Several Kulas families in Minto, Warsaw, North Dakota. Five Kulas boys from Winona were killed in World War II.
